2008 GHBA SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS GRANTED
Each year the Greater Hughesville Business Association awards scholarships to one boy and one girl graduating from East Lycoming High School who plan to pursue a business major in college.  This year the scholarship amount was increased to $750.  Congratulations to Hughesville seniors Clarissa Brown and Derrick Sheatler, the 2008 recipients of the GHBA scholarships.  Clarissa Brown is the daughter of William and Marilyn Brown.  After graduation she plans to attend Lafayette College to major in Business and Economics.  Derrick Sheatler is the son of Tammy Sheatler.  Following graduation Derrick will be attending Drexel University to major in Business Economics.  Good luck to both Clarissa and Derrick on their future endeavors!

SUMMER PLANTING OF MAIN STREET FLOWER POTS
"We will plant come rain AND sunshine," seemed to be the motto for members of GHBA as they completed summer planting of the Main Street flower pots on May 23, 2008, as the weather alternated between rain bursts and bright sunshine.  The planting was scheduled and completed in anticipation of the Memorial Day holiday.  Special thanks to GHBA members Becky Fought and Deb Sullivan for completing this project, as well as helpers Tracy Rishel, Kaitlin Lunger, and Jeannie Willis Dykstra.  Becky and Jeanne are also members of the Regional Main Street Program.

2008 GOLF TOURNAMENT
"Perfect golf weather" was the consensus among the players at this year’s 10th Annual GHBA golf tournament held on May 14, 2008, at the Mill Race Golf Course in Benton. Following the golf tournament, a dinner was then served at the Muncy Valley Moose where names were drawn for the 50/50 and raffle contests, as well as announcing the winners of the day’s golfing contests (see winners lists below).

The annual golf tournament is GHBA's only major fundraiser, and we want to thank everyone who donated time and money to make this event possible. Those individuals and businesses that sponsored T-shirts, golf holes and/or provided donations for this year's raffle and door prizes are listed below. Without their support, not to mention the golfers themselves, our success would not be possible.

Thanks go out to the members of the GHBA golf committee for their time in organizing and planning the tournament: Pauline Freezer Barber, Linda Gordner and Mike Sullivan. Kudos also to the additional volunteers who worked the day of the tournament: Paul Falk, Amy Gardner, Chris Lechien, Tracy Rishel, and Deb Sullivan. Special thanks to Martin Payne of the Veterans of the Vietnam War, Inc., PA Post-51, for organizing and manning the putting contest.

The proceeds from this year's tournament will be used to support the H.H.S. Scholarship Fund, as well as upcoming projects benefiting the greater Hughesville community.

We're always looking for ways to improve the annual tournament and would appreciate your feedback. Should you have any recommendations for changes or improvements in next year's tournament, send us an e-mail at info@hughesvillebusiness.orgClick Here to visit the online Photo Gallery

CHRISTMAS PARADE
GHBA sponsored a Christmas Parade to welcome Santa as he brought the wintry weather from the North Pole to Hughesville on December 2, 2007. Santa waved to everyone as he rode atop the fire truck through Hughesville and then greeted children at the HVFD Social Hall. In conjunction with American Legion Post 35, a Christmas Party was held in the Social Hall immediately following the parade. McDonald characters Grimace, Birdy and the Hamburglar greeted children at the door as they came in from the frosty weather. Light refreshments of cookies and juice were provided. Following entertainment by Gopher the Clown, all children were given the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap to tell him how good they’ve been all year and what presents they were hoping to receive this Christmas. During the party the Legion sold tickets and awarded cash prizes to four lucky winners. Children were also able to make a Christmas craft and were given gift bags at the end of the event. Click Here to visit our Parade Photo Gallery!

The Christmas Parade and Party would not have been possible without support from the following:

  • Legion Post 35 - Thanks to all members who organized the Christmas Party, helped with the preparations, and attended the day of the event.
  • Hughesville McDonald's - Thanks for the cookie donations and for allowing Grimace, Birdy, and Hamburglar to participate.
  • TJ’s Market – Thanks for donation of juice boxes.
  • GHBA Members - Thanks to those members who donated juice boxes and homemade cookies, helped with coordination of the parade, and showed up in spite of the frosty weather! Special kudos to Deb Sullivan and Tracy Rishel for carrying the GHBA banner in the parade and for Denise Spotts for coordinating parade formation.
  • Also thanks to our ad sponsors: Doug Spotts Appliance, Hughesville Laundry Basket, Dan Gardner Construction, Inc., Dave Thomas Signs, CK Business Consultants, Inc., Muncy Bank & Trust, Sullivan’s Service Station, East Lycoming Shopper & News, Citizens & Northern Bank, and Robin Real Estate.
  • Citizens & Northern Bank - Thanks for printing the flyers that were distributed throughout the community.
  • And most of all ... thanks to SANTA CLAUS for coming to Hughesville!

WINTER DECORATING OF MAIN STREET
